This chapter will deal with a few studies selected to illustrate the principles which appear to govern autonomic-nervous-system (ANS) functions in the organism during its natural life. Emphasis will be placed on interpretation, on clinical implications, and on future directions, in this way considering the properties of the ANS as it functions while the organism interacts with its environment.
