The category of social maladjustment arises when there is a clear lack of harmony between an individual and society; and if the psychiatrist is to consider the matter from both ends—from the individual or intrapsychic end, and from the sociological or interpersonal end—then some familiarity with what are ordinarily considered sociological issues is necessary.
