Insight has been a key tool in psychoanalytic treatment since its earliest days. Analytic thought has come to view the acquisition of insight as a complex process, in which the ego function of self-observation is a major component. After tracing the evolution of this line of thought, detailed consideration is given to self-observation, its nature, its structure, and its place in the analytic process. (44 pp.)
