Psychotherapy In Old Age

There are possibilities for growth and change throughout life, including old age. Therefore psychotherapy is useful with older people, although it is less commonly practiced than would be appropriate. It is also a valuable part of the general treatment program for a variety of emotional and mental conditions among the elderly, not excluding those with varying degrees of organic brain disorder. Unfortunately, many psychotherapists resist undertaking psychotherapy with older people, and many older people themselves look upon their situation as futile. Consequently, in this chapter, these obstacles to treatment must be considered in addition to general therapeutic principles and common themes. (63 pp.)

Old Age

For some old age becomes a consummation of one’s life, for others it is an occasion for grief, guilt, and despair. This essay deals with the nature of old age, its normal conditions, and it potentiality for psychopathology. With increasing life expectancy the so-called problems but also the opportunities of old age will be increasing. (46 pp.)
