Our knowledge of functional disturbances in brain damage is based on the patient’s symptoms. The pathological anatomical picture seldom indicates the degree of functional disturbance produced by the injury. The kind of damage – such as hemorrhage, tumor, inflammation, or intoxication – has a different effect on the functional disturbance.
