This chapter examines the case study of Frau Emmy. Freud writes: “[I] can give no better advice to anyone interested in the development of catharsis into psycho-analysis than to begin with Studies on Hysteria and thus follow the path which I myself have trodden” (1895, p. xxxi). In this way we shall to some extent redress the oblivion that has fallen upon hysterical women, the wet nurses of psychoanalysis.

The Psychoanalytic Century: Freud’s Legacy for the Future
The Psychoanalytic Century examines and celebrates Freud’s extraordinary influence on modern analysis and Western culture as a whole. The book comprehensively covers the evolution of our understanding of hysteria as the diagnostic entity through which Freud invented psychoanalysis, and the assessment of the contribution of Freud and his successors to the theory of love and clinical approaches to love relations, as well as to literature, the visual arts, international diplomacy, and race. In this volume we celebrate Freud’s legacy, and explore the scope of his impact on psychoanalysis, society, and culture. The contributions of many distinguished colleagues follow the evolution of analysis as his ideas move beyond historical artifact to become living internal objects, embedded in Western culture.(440 pp.)
Beyond Freud:A Study of Modern Psychoanalytic Theorists
Psychoanalysis is being expanded by the intellectual vitality and energy of a host of creative psychoanalytic thinkers. This book presents the work of 14 modern analytic theorists. (837 pp.)
Review:
Reppen has filled a void in an area of considerable importance to the psychoanalytic community. His editorial judgement is excellent, wise selections were made both in theorists and presenters … BEYOND FREUD is informative of the present provocative clash of ideas, and in its dialogue the dialectic of Freudian inspired thought has been fully realized. One can have great respect for the brilliant, systematic and developing systems of thought that the various theorists have offered. These, in themselves, are substantial contributions to increasing awareness of the psychological nature of people and their treatment when needed.
